Inspiring Independence
From Powerless to Powerful: The Journey to Becoming An Independent Woman
My transformation from a powerless female to an independent woman—dare I say, an Independent Woman—did not happen overnight. It unfolded gradually over the course of nearly 50 years, filled with stops and starts, lessons learned, and personal breakthroughs. Like many of you, I’ve grown by learning from incredible mentors, making necessary changes when I recognized the need, and continuing to move forward—even when the path wasn’t always clear.
Each of us is uniquely made, and our paths are just as diverse. This book is written especially for Executive Directors of social service nonprofits that serve women. From experience, I know that you—capable, resilient, and creative—are already Wonder Women simply by stepping into the role of managing (or even founding) these critical programs. You’ve taken your passion and turned it into something visible, something real. You juggle countless responsibilities, face frequent burnout, and yet continue to show up every day because you care deeply.
There are countless books out there on building organizational capacity, and just as many self-help guides—many of which I’ve read and benefited from on my own journey toward a healthier, more empowered life. But this book is different. It’s my attempt to blend the practical with the personal—to bridge the gap between building strong organizations and cultivating the inner strength required to lead them.
At the heart of this work is you. Your self-esteem, your resilience, your confidence—these are not side issues; they are vital to your well-being and the impact you have on others. This book offers a foundational framework I call the "Steps to Independence"—a process designed to help you reclaim your power, affirm your worth, and step fully into the freedom of recognizing who you’ve always been.
Step One – Acknowledging your limits
Step Two – See your choices
Step Three – Owning your abilities
Step Four – Letting your passions guide you
Step Five – Building on your success
Step Six – Recognizing your Independent Woman status
Step Seven – Passing it on
This book is about transformation—your transformation. If you’re willing to do the inner work, stay true to your passion, trust those who reflect your brilliance back to you, and then reach out to uplift others, you’ll find the freedom, confidence, and power that have been yours all along.
